Semana Santa or the Holy Week leads up to Easter Sunday, commemorating the passion, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Antigua, Guatemala holds some of the grandest processions over beautifully intricate alfombras (carpets) with elaborate andas (floats), made, organized and borne by cucuruchos (bearers). The scenes are depicted through story frames accompanied by evocative music.
A mix of colonial Spanish and indigenus cultural beliefs, it makes for a unique spectacle.
I followed a group of cucuruchos from la hermandad (the brotherhood) as the procession made it's way across the city.
